It is the new species in the class of Borrelia species and is very much homologous to Borreliaburdorferi in immunological, phenotypic, and genetic characteristics. This bacterium is responsible for causing diseases like Acrodermatitischronicaatrophicans (ACA) and Lyme disease. Research is occurring to better understand its structures and function and to identify the treatment of the diseases caused by this bacterium. The sequencing of this particular species is ongoing, but the chromosomes of previously identified species are linear, and circular and range from 900 to 920 kbp in size. It is also thought that Borreliaafzelii is derived from Borreliaburgdorferi. The size of Borrelia spirochetes is 02-0.5 µm wide and5 to 25 µm long. This species is spiral in shape, aerobic and motile; also, it is gram-negative like its other species and is transferred from ticks. It survives on lipoprotein within the hosts, which is its specific nutritional need. Borreliaafzelii is located inside the digestive tract of a flea or a tick. Once in the tick's digestive tract, it can be transmitted to humans through a bite and can cause Lyme disease.
